Will Stargate Be a Portal Powering the Future of AI for All?
The Stargate Project is an American artificial intelligence (AI) company created by OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX. Announced on January 21, 2025, by U.S. President Donald Trump, the company plans to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the United States by 2029. Masayoshi Son will serve as the company’s chairman. This initiative, described by Trump as “the largest AI infrastructure project in history,” is designed to secure American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and drive global economic benefits.
The company was introduced at a White House press conference where President Trump was joined by Sam Altman of OpenAI, Larry Ellison of Oracle, and Masayoshi Son of SoftBank. Trump emphasized the scale of the project and indicated that emergency declarations would be used to expedite its development, particularly in terms of energy infrastructure. The company launched with an initial $100 billion investment, which may rise to $500 billion by 2029. Currently, 10 data centers are under construction in Texas, with plans to expand to other states. Trump has expressed support for the project through executive orders aimed at facilitating its development.
SoftBank is taking on the financial responsibility for Stargate, while OpenAI manages operational aspects to ensure the infrastructure supports advanced AI technologies. Arm, Microsoft, Nvidia, Oracle, and OpenAI are key technology partners contributing to the project. Notably, OpenAI and Microsoft had already begun developing an AI supercomputer, also named “Stargate,” in 2024, laying the groundwork for this initiative.
Operation Stargate is a comprehensive effort to address current limitations in AI infrastructure by constructing advanced data centers and computing systems. The project aims to deploy resources immediately, creating jobs while supporting the re-industrialization of the United States and enhancing national security for America and its allies. By removing infrastructure bottlenecks, it will enable faster and more efficient development of advanced AI and artificial general intelligence (AGI).
