What A Difference An AI Year Makes

Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. The first alebrijes, along with the invention of the term, originated with Mexico City cartonero Pedro Linares. For over a decade, I have been collecting these colourful creatures during my regular trips to Mexico City. A little under a year ago, with the aid of a previous version of Midjourney, I started to explore the world of generative AI and created a wide range of unique and fantastical creatures using /imagine high resolution ultra realistic HD colourful Mexican Alebrijes as the prompt.

With the ongoing evolution of Midjourney, the significance of prompt engineering in shaping the resulting images has become more evident than ever. The prompt I've shared below was created with ChatGPT and used with the latest version of Midjourney V 5.1 which led to the creation of the captivating images displayed in the slideshow above.

/imagine As a Mexican arts and crafts artist, I am thrilled to showcase the rich and vibrant world of alebrijes, traditional wooden sculptures that bring to life the imagination and creativity of Mexican folk art. Alebrijes are enchanting creatures, beautifully handcrafted and adorned with a kaleidoscope of colors, intricate patterns, and whimsical features.

Each alebrije is a testament to the skilled craftsmanship and artistic vision of Mexican artisans. These wooden sculptures are meticulously carved and shaped, capturing the essence of various animals with a touch of fantasy and surrealism. From majestic jaguars to mythical creatures, alebrijes embody a fusion of reality and dreams.

The vibrant colors that adorn the alebrijes are a feast for the eyes. Bold and vivid hues dance across the wooden canvas, creating a visual symphony that reflects the spirit and energy of Mexican culture. Bright blues, fiery reds, vibrant yellows, and lush greens come together in harmonious combinations, bringing these creatures to life with a burst of joy and playfulness.

One of the distinguishing features of alebrijes is the intricate dotting technique that adorns their bodies. Thousands of tiny, meticulously placed dots form mesmerizing patterns, adding depth, texture, and a touch of magic to the sculptures. The dots are often arranged in symmetrical or asymmetrical designs, radiating from the core of the alebrije's form, captivating the viewer's gaze.

Exaggerated features are another hallmark of alebrijes. Ears, tails, and facial expressions take on fantastical proportions, amplifying the whimsy and character of these creatures. Elongated ears reach towards the sky, tails curl and twist with playful energy, and exaggerated facial features evoke a sense of curiosity and charm. These distinctive elements lend each alebrije a unique personality and narrative, inviting viewers into a world where imagination knows no bounds.

Beyond their aesthetic beauty, alebrijes hold cultural significance in Mexican folklore. They represent the melding of indigenous beliefs and artistic expression, embodying the spirit of animal guides and mythical beings. In Mexican culture, alebrijes are seen as protectors, bringing luck, happiness, and warding off evil spirits.

As a Mexican arts and crafts artist, I take great pride in creating alebrijes that celebrate the diversity and enchantment of this traditional art form. Each sculpture is a labor of love, infused with the vibrant colors of Mexico, the stories of mythical creatures, and the passion of generations of artisans. Alebrijes are not just sculptures; they are vessels of creativity, expressions of joy, and a testament to the enduring beauty of Mexican folk art.

Given the pace of innovation in the field of generative AI, it's challenging yet exciting to envisage the leaps and bounds this technology will make in the upcoming months. The path of my creative voyage lies wide open, and I eagerly anticipate the treasure trove of discoveries that await me in this enthralling domain.

Stay tuned!
